Abstract

Metis refers to a form of practical intelligence – the capability to act in situations where the field cannot be fully described and continiues to change while one is acting. In organizations, metis appears wherever planning reaches its limits: in transitions, in ambiguos responsibility spaces, in dynamic environments and in conflicts between formal commitment and lived practice.

This Working Papers develops metis as a navigational capability and distinguishes it form related concepts such as expertise, intuition, improvisation and agility. At its center is a causal model that treats metis not as an individual trait, but as a context-bound capability – enabled or blocked by attention, time architecture, framed provisionality and coherence.

From this model, design principles are derived for how organizations can sharpen perception, frame decision corridors, allow early course correction and create commitment without theatre. Metis becomes a bridge, between knowledge and action, between draft and obligation and between movement and meaing. The aim is not to “solve” uncertainty, but to navigate it in a way that keeps learning possible, before corrections become expensive.
